"On the Road," India Style

If Indian cities are the epitome of noise, congestion, and crowds, the national highways are their perfect complement: empty, calm, and with vast views. Our itinerary took us to three cities in Rajasthan in four days, so, needless to say, there was a lot of time to enjoy the view as the countryside passed us by.

We were very fortunate to have a friend up in Rajasthan who acted as the most wonderful tour guide for us -- driving us around, using his connections on our behalf, and showing us a very unique side of life in Rajasthan (more on this later).

A few shots from our car travels between Bikaner and Jaisalmer:

At a rest-stop along the way:

A flat tire in the middle of the Indian desert. At one point an SUV zoomed past us, and then reversed for a good football-field length distance. At first I thought it was nice of them to offer to help; it turns out, they just stayed in their car and watched. I guess tourists changing a tire on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere makes for good entertainment!
